Civil Services

Civil Services is the most prestigious as well as sought after career in India. Exam for Civil Services is held annually by UPSC in two stages - Preliminary and Main. Further Main Exam is also a two-tier examination comprising of Written Exam and Interview.


Preliminary Exam: (Held in May/June every year)
Consists of two papers;
Paper I (General Studies) - Multiple Choice Type Questions, Paper is set in both English and Hindi, Max. Marks 200. Main components of GS paper are
i) History of India
ii) India's Freedom Struggle
iii) Indian Polity & Constitution
iv) Indian Economy
v) Geography of India
vi) General Science
vii) Current Affairs
viii) Environmental Studies
ix) Miscellaneous GK
Paper II (CSAT) - Multiple Choice Type Questions, Paper is set in both English and Hindi, Max. Marks 200. Main components of CSAT paper are
i) Verbal Skills
ii) Analytical Reasoning
iii) Logical Reasoning
iv) Data Interpretation
v) Data Sufficiency
vi) Mathematical Ability
vii) Moral & Ethical Decision Making


Main Exam: (Held in Oct/Nov every year)
Consists of nine papers;
1. Paper I - English
2. Paper II - Any one of the Indian Languages
3. Paper III - Essay Writing
4. Paper IV - GS Paper I
5. Paper V - GS Paper II
6. Paper VI - Optional Subject I  Paper I
7. Paper VII - Optional Subject I Paper II
8. Paper VIII - Optional Subject II Paper I
9. Paper IX - Optional Subject II Paper II
Interview (Held in March/April)


APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Application procedure for Civil Services Exam is very simple. Applications are invited every year in the month of December and the last date for applications falls somewhere in January. UPSC advertisement/notification appears in all leading newspapers and Employment News in the month of December. To apply one has to buy a UPSC Application From from Post Office and then it has to apply accordingly following the instructions there in the Application Form and information brochure with it.
